Sites in Conflict

Cultural heritage sites emerging from conflict face particular threats and challenges. The countries in which they are located are often politically, economically, or culturally isolated. As a result, many lack the infrastructure needed to care for their cultural heritage.

Additionally, the perception of these areas as war zones can overshadow the value of the historic sites; WMF's experience working with Iraq has made this especially clear.

Through the Sites in Conflict program, WMF seeks to draw attention to a special area of need in global preservation and to address the distinctive problems these sites share. By working closely with local communities, WMF will not only be able to help develop practical solutions to these challenges, but also work to overcome the political and economic prejudices that isolate sites in conflict from the international community of support.

The Sites in Conflict initiative was made possible with support from the J.M. Kaplan Fund.
