Heritage Conservation in South America : Challenges and Solutions
Abstract:
Drawing over 150 attendees, the first conference held by World Monuments Fund in the region proved a tremendous success, reaching new milestones and catalyzing change for improvement. We extend our deep appreciation for the generous support of all sponsors and parties involved in making this conference possible. Discussions initiated at the conference have led to important new contacts for the World Monuments Fund, and rekindled old ones with productive results. Numerous projects that were stalled have since gained momentum. Advancements at Vila de Paranapiacaba in Brazil, the burial structures of Rio Lauca in Bolivia, the mission of San Ignacio Mini in Argentina, the Church of San Franciso in Venezuela, the murals of a church in Rapaz, Peru, and at the ceremonial site of Orongo, Easter Island, Chile are also evident. Most importantly, our awareness efforts and distribution of nomination forms for the World Monuments Watch has already encouraged new requests for assistance from the Watch Program and WMF’s Wilson Challenge Program.
