Abstract:

Describes the scope of work proposed for the 1993-1994 campaign of World Monuments Fund at the temple complex of Preah Khan in Angkor, Cambodia. In the face of political uncertainty, the proposed conservation projects are limited to those that had been initiated during the first field campaign in 1992-1993. These include the Vishnu Temple Complex, the main focus of the field campaign, and also the Dharmasala, the lanterns along the West Processional Way, and select architectural elements in danger of imminent collapse. The conservation proposals are followed by proposals for documentation, training, and other research projects. Documentation work would concentrate on a computerized inventory of architectural elements and movable artifacts using custom software. On-site training for Cambodian students is proposed, along with support for international study and academic guidance. Diverse lines of inquiry for research are also identified. The report includes a detailed budget and schedule. The 12th century temple complex of Preah Khan in Angkor, Cambodia is one of the most significant remains of the ancient Khmer civilization. This is one of a series of reports charting the evolution of the conservation efforts of World Monuments Fund at Preah Khan.
