Abstract:

Proposes a project to conserve the 12th century temple complex of Preah Khan in Angkor, Cambodia, one of the most significant remains of the ancient Khmer civilization. Prepared by a World Monuments Fund consultant subsequent to two field missions to Angkor organized in 1989 and 1991, this proposal notes the need for better facilities on site, the necessity of stabilizing structures for safety, and the need for an administrative body to oversee the work. The report raises the issue of cultural tourism and recognizes the opportunity to publicize conservation activities in Cambodia. This two-part report issued concurrently with “Report II: Preah Khan Conservation Project – Project Identification” and “Preah Khan Report III: Conservation Plan.”
