Saving the Cultural Heritage of Iraq

Since 2004, WMF has been partnering with the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) on our Iraq Cultural Heritage Conservation Initiative, a program that addresses the catastrophic damage sustained by Iraq's cultural heritage during the current conflict. One of the initiative's main goals is to create a national system to document site conditions and needs, and address threats to cultural resources. Last month, WMF convened leaders of the Iraq State Board of Antiquities and Heritage at a workshop in Amman, Jordan, hosted by the American Center of Oriental Research. Led by WMF staff members Gaetano Palumbo and Michelle Berenfeld, and our partners at the GCI, the workshop provided an opportunity for Iraqi archaeologists and conservators to report on their working conditions and priorities for the coming years. After the workshop, participants visited the nearby site of Jerash, Jordan (pictured above), where conservators answered questions from the Iraqis about their work.

Delhi Heritage Route and Sustainable Tourism

WMF's Technical Director Mark Weber recently returned from the 12th annual International Conference of National Trusts in New Delhi, India. Mark was part of a panel on Heritage Tourism and spoke about the recent WMF grant to the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) through the Sustainable Tourism Initiative. The grant will fund a pilot project, a 10-kilometer Heritage Route, which will facilitate visitation to the heritage districts of Delhi, while easing congestion in the streets.
