South Asia Floods
World Monuments Fund mourns the lives lost in the catastrophic floods that continue to wreak havoc in Pakistan and northern India. We have been in touch with colleagues in Leh, a town in Jammu and Kashmir, who have been giving us updates on the scope of the devastation. Some positive news is trickling through as local communities begin rebuilding efforts. WMF has committed funds to assist with efforts in the region with the Namgyal Institute for Research on Ladakhi Art and Culture.
"The Emperor's Private Paradise" Opening
The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City, an exhibition of objects from the Qianlong Garden in Beijing's Forbidden City, opens at its first stop, the Peabody Essex Museum, on September 14. Ninety objects belonging to the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736-96), one of the richest and most powerful men of the 18th century, will be on display for the first time. The objects are traveling while WMF and the Palace Museum undertake conservation work on the buildings that house them. The Qianlong Garden project is WMF's largest ever: when the project ends in 2019, 27 buildings and gardens will have been conserved and opened to the public.
