Scent Dinner

If you look at any of World Monuments Fund’s sites, it’s obvious that they are the result of the culmination of hard work, great creativity, and, above all, passion on the part of many. This was also the case with WMF’s June 26 scent dinner, where I was delighted to be one of the lucky attendees.

Belize City was established by English settlers in the seventeenth century, mainly due to the extraction of mahogany and chicle. Houses were mainly built of wood with a lower story of brick; polished mahogany was used profusely for the doors and paneling, and often included “gingerbread” details.

An Overview of Denchu House and Atelier

The Yanaka and Ueno-Sakuragi neighborhoods where the Denchu House and Atelier is located have been a center for artisans and culture since the Edo period (1603–1868), especially after the Tokyo Fine Art School (now known as Tokyo University of the Arts) was established in Ueno in 1887.

Updates from Ulug Depe and Paris

Beside the archaeological excavations continuing at the site, since the inclusion of Ulug Depe on the 2012 Watch, two restoration sessions have taken place at the dig-house in the nearby village of Dushak. The new up-to-date restoration laboratory was inaugurated in October 2010 by Mrs. Shelby White, a Trustee of the Leon Levy Foundation, which sponsored the purchase of all needed equipment as well as the renovation of the premises to conform to international standards. As a matter of fact, with the help of the Leon-Levy Foundation, ever since that date it has been our concern to train local restorers in modern methods and means in conservation of archaeological artifacts.

I recently spent two weeks in the Czech Republic, participating in a library and information science seminar sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Charles University in Prague, central Europe’s oldest university.
