Traditional Building Arts Training
In the United States and around the world, there is a growing need for craftspeople experienced in the preservation artsdisciplines that combine traditional building crafts with a knowledge of preservation philosophies and conservation science. New models and opportunities for education and training in the preservation arts are necessary to assure the survival of humankind's built legacy.
In response, WMF developed the Traditional Building Arts Training Initiative, which included the creation of the Preservation Arts & Technology curriculum at the Brooklyn High School of the Arts in New York City, and international exchange programs for craftspeople. Over the next decade, WMF will develop a sustainable training model that can be replicated in the United States.
Through WMF-sponsored symposia, research, and field projectsincluding field schools at Watch sites, this initiative provides opportunities for training and exchange among craftspeople, architects, conservators, and educators. WMF is also developing a task force to identify needs, develop goals, and address the need for nationwide standards and guidelines.
