BACKGROUND

King Manuel I erected a large monastery close to the site where Henry the Navigator had built a church dedicated to Santa Maria de Belém in the fifteenth century. The monastery, given to the Order of St. Jerome, which had strong connections to the monarchy, became known as Jerónimos Monastery. (...)

HOW WE HELPED

The conservation project for the cloister of Jeronimos Monastery involved extensive condition surveys, documentation of the history of the structure and its changes over time, and treatment of areas that had deteriorated. Work included addressing protective measures to improve drainage and prevent water infiltration.

WHY IT MATTERS

The sixteenth-century cloister of Jeronimos Monastery is an architectural masterpiece filled with artistic elements that have been admired for centuries. The cloister is of particular significance for the Portuguese, as it symbolizes the age of exploration, a time when there was intensive maritime campaigns spanning the globe, particularly the western coast of Africa and the New World.
