BACKGROUND

Beginning in the seventeenth century, the Jesuit Order founded a series of thirty missions in the lush rainforest of what is now Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. The missions combine Spanish baroque architecture, indigenous materials and building technology, and religious symbolism mixing local traditions and European Catholic liturgy. (...)

HOW WE HELPED

San Ignacio Miní was included on the 1996 World Monuments Watch, bringing attention to Guaraní culture and the legacy of this ensemble of missions. In 2004, the site was relisted as the Jesuit Guarani Missions along with São Nicolau and La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná. (...)

WHY IT MATTERS

The Jesuit Missions contributed significantly to the economic development of the region. The Jesuits also transformed the landscape and harnessed natural resources, bringing complicated changes to the life of native populations. The Jesuit Order left its mark even after the Spanish Crown expelled them. (...)

Our engagement has ranged from catalytic support, helping local groups prepare site for World Heritage inscription, to conservation work at sites already on the list. World Heritage cultural sites reflect the achievements of communities over time and this vast array of special places recognizes that our planets is filled with extraordinary sites that range from the humble and obscure to the grand and famous.
