Baghdad Gymnasium

Given the abundance of information on Le Corbusier in the Western world, it was surprisingly difficult to locate the construction archives for this building.

Caecilia Pieri

Designed by famed Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier between 1957 and 1965, Baghdad Gymnasium was only completed after his death in 1980. The building is one of many modern works built by foreign architects in Baghdad during Iraq’s period of economic prosperity in the 1970s.  Now unused, Baghdad Gymnasium faces a double threat of deterioration and the after-effects of conflict.
