Three Months in Arica, Part I

We, Yadira and María Esther, are members of the Grupo Patrimonio Qoriorqo, a civil non-profit organization made up of young men and women from Andahuaylillas, Peru. The group was created in 2009 with the support of World Monuments Fund and the parish of Andahuaylillas, as a side project to the restoration of the Church of San Pedro Apóstol.

Stobi’s Long History and Today’s Opportunities

The archaeological site of Stobi has a history of habitation dating back to the late Bronze Age. Livy recorded Stobi as urbs vetus (old city) in the Hellenistic period, and later, during the early Roman Empire, it developed into a municipium and the largest town in the north of the province of Macedonia.

Watch Day in Jacmel Historic District, Haiti

As I flew over Port au Prince last September, almost three years after the devastating earthquake that killed a quarter of a million people in 2010, I tried to find the blue tents that used to be everywhere in and around the city signaling the location of the homeless camps, and I saw with relief that they were mostly gone, although empty patches of recently cleared rubble filled the landscape instead.

Watch Day in Remedios, Cuba

I arrived in Havana on a hot day last September and stayed overnight at the postmodernist Telégrafo Hotel, located at the corner of Prado and Neptuno streets, a place known as the birthplace of the cha-cha-cha, a style of Cuban music that became popular in the 1950s. Early the next morning, I left for the town of Remedios, located in the middle of the country, 320 kilometers east of the capital.

Work Begins at the New York Studio School

WMF’s project in collaboration with the Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University launched this week. Students from the Conservation Center will analyze paint finishes on the spectacular fireplace and chimney of the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney studio at the New York Studio School.

On October 23, a distinguished group of guests gathered at the Plaza to honor Kenneth I. Chenault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Express and the Duke of Devonshire KCVO CBE DL. Henry Kissinger's tribute to Kenneth Chenault upon his receipt of WMF's Hadrian Award illustrated Mr. Chenault's tremendous commitment to preserving irreplaceable historic sites around the world.

A Tour of the Four Freedoms Memorial in New York City

WMF staff in New York visited the Four Freedoms Memorial on Roosevelt Island in New York City in advance of its opening to the public in October. We were given the tour by Gina Pollara, Executive Director of the Four Freedoms Park and one of the people who worked tirelessly for years to see Louis Kahn’s vision for this space realized nearly 40 years after it was conceived.
