A Look at the 2018 World Monuments Watch
Every two years, the World Monuments Watch issues a call to action for treasured cultural sites around the globe. Since 1996, when the Watch was founded with support from American Express, it has recognized 814 sites that face daunting threats or present compelling conservation opportunities, and it has catalyzed over $300 million of investment in their protection and conservation.
The 2018 Watch, announced on October 16, 2017, includes 25 sites representing a wide variety of challenges ranging from human conflict and urbanization to natural disaster and climate change. From ancient sites to works of the 20th century, from rural settings to bustling urban centers, the 2018 Watch sites present timely opportunities for conservation, community engagement, and sustainable development. Here is a glance at the 25 sites.
