Celebrating World Heritage Day: Tebaida Leonesa

Each year on April 18, we celebrate World Heritage Day to bring global attention to the conservation needs of treasured sites and celebrate the diversity of our shared, global heritage. This year’s theme is rural heritage, raising awareness about the relevance of rural landscapes and the challenges related to their conservation.

To celebrate, we’re taking a look at Tebaida Leonesa, a 2018 World Monuments Watch site in León, Spain, that faces a unique set of challenges in the face of growing tourism and development. Last year, we visited the small towns of Tebaida to capture and speak with the long-time residents who are tasked with the care and maintenance of their cultural heritage. We thank American Express, founding sponsor of the World Monuments Watch, for their support.
