Pabellón de los Hexágonos
I think this is one of the most remarkable buildings in Madrid. Sadly, it is unused and in serious danger of deterioration and demolition.
Originally designed as the Spanish Pavilion for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair by José Antonio Corrales and Ramón Vazquez Molezún, the Pabellón de los Hexágonos was dismantled after the fair and reconstructed in Madrid. While World’s Fairs have traditionally provided a setting for daring and innovative but ephemeral new architecture, occasionally those buildings can become permanent. Even so, they are not always cared for: the Pabellón, like Philip Johnson’s 1964 World’s Fair New York State Pavilion, has been neglected and fallen into serious disrepair. Despite the effort it took to reconstruct, there are no current plans to preserve it.
