Position Title: WMF in the Arab Countries Regional Representative
Direct Report: The Chief Executive Officer and the Executive Vice President of World Monuments Fund.
Location: Manama, Bahrain.

This position must have the right to work and live in Bahrain.

I. Position Summary

World Monuments Fund (WMF) is seeking a Regional Representative for its new WMF in the Arab Countries (WMF-ITAC) office based in Manama, Bahrain. This position will lead this ambitious regional office to safeguard irreplaceable heritage in the Arab countries as detailed in WMF’s regional strategic plan that aligns with and supports World Monuments Fund in its global mission.

This is a highly rewarding opportunity for a creative and energetic leader to make a real difference in the conservation of extraordinary historic buildings, landscapes, and monuments and to the people who care for them.

We are looking for someone who will take the lead on launching this new office under the auspices of the Shaikh Ebrahim Center. Candidates should have a proven track record as a big-picture and creative thinker, and a networked strategic fundraiser with the vision and skills to successfully support heritage conservation projects executed by experienced regional project directors through fundraising, communications, advocacy, and partnership building. This role will oversee the governance of WMF-ITAC, grow the membership of the WMF-ITAC International Council Chapter, which is comprised of the foremost regional supporters and stakeholders, and organize events while keeping WMF Headquarters apprised of all activities. Flexibility and nimbleness to respond to needs and challenges as they emerge, ensuring balance of big vision and carefully crafted deliverables, is critical.

Reporting to WMF’s CEO and Executive Vice President, this role will be the key representative of WMF-ITAC. This role will also be an important voice in WMF’s International Leadership team, liaising with colleagues in New York and other WMF affiliate and regional office leads across the world.

Background: World Monuments Fund in the Arab Countries

World Monuments Fund (WMF) has a long history of partnership and collaboration in the Arab Countries, where we have raised over $30 million for more than 60 projects in 12 countries over the course of our engagement there. WMF continues to have active projects in the region managed by highly respected WMF Project Directors and Managers. Through our projects, WMF works closely with community members, civil society, heritage authorities, government agencies, academic institutions, and a variety of professionals to execute cultural heritage preservation projects.

Building on our experience and to drive results in the field of cultural heritage in the region, WMF aspires to create a permanent representative office for the region. This office will be supported by a group of Founding Members of WMF in the Arab Countries (WMF-ITAC). Under the leadership of WMF Trustee, H. E. Shaikha Mai Al Khalifa, Founding Members serve as regional ambassadors for WMF to create connections, advocate for cultural heritage preservation, help WMF find project partners, and participate in WMF activities and events.

Founding Members constitute a WMF International Council Chapter. WMF’s International Council is a global group of philanthropists committed to safeguarding cultural heritage both in their local region and around the world. Currently, there are active chapters in the United States, Peru, France, India, and the United Kingdom. Sustained by a love of history, art, and architecture, International Council members cooperate with WMF’s leadership, and each other, to chart the organization’s global strategy and maximize its impact. All members of the International Council are invited to participate in a global program of events and activities, including an annual Hadrian Gala, World Monuments Summit, Monumental Journey’s travel program to visit WMF projects around the world, as well as the programming of events by WMF’s affiliate offices.

The Regional Representative, WMF in the Arab Countries will be responsible for managing communications and fundraising efforts with the WMF-ITAC Founding Members, as well as organizing local events for the WMF-ITAC International Council Chapter, liaising closely with WMF HQ to incorporate them into a global calendar of activities.

II. Responsibilities 

  • To develop a WMF-ITAC strategy and operational budget that contributes towards WMF’s global mission and priorities.
  • To drive financial support for the operations of WMF-ITAC – seeking, creating, and delivering ambitious fundraising programs to underpin our cause, grow International Council membership, and raise the visibility of WMF through our events, communications, and partnerships.
  • To grow WMF-ITAC International Council Chapter and organize events for members.
  • To work closely with the WMF-ITAC Founding Members on governance, operations, and financial reporting.
  • To work closely with WMF Headquarters as part of a global organization, and to liaise with the WMF affiliate heads to contribute to the organization’s mission as an international leadership team.
  • To work with the region’s Project Directors to engage WMF-ITAC International Council members, governments, and institutional partners with regional projects and fundraise as needed.
  • To work with WMF Headquarters, to formulate and achieve annual goals and objectives (OKR’s).
  • To craft and uphold an MOU with WMF and the Shaikh Ebrahim Center and develop a proposal for the long-term sustainability of the presence of WMF in the Arab Countries.
  • To ensure the long-term sustainability of the presence of WMF in the Arab Countries, through effective leadership, the overall management and administration of WMF-ITAC, as well as in the execution of the organization’s policies.

III. Key Result Areas

To provide the leadership to deliver the agreed vision, strategy values and specific objectives of the WMFI by:

  • Develop a strategic plan that details fundraising, communications, and outreach goals for the region for approval by WMF Headquarters.
  • Cooperate with WMF headquarters to pursue the global agenda including the World Monuments Watch™ Program, the International Council, and other worldwide initiatives.
  • Increase the WMF-ITAC International Council Chapter membership.
  • Develop existing and build new relationships with funders, strategic partners, governments, and other stakeholders.
  • Identify, build, and generate fundraising opportunities for operations and projects in the Middle East.
  • Create and maintain strong relationships with press and influencers to raise awareness of WMF’s mission and projects.
  • Explore new projects in the region with WMF Project Directors, and successfully promote WMF’s contributions.

IV. Qualifications 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with preference for master’s degree (preferred majors in Art History, Business, English, History, or International Affairs)
  • 10+ years of experience in leadership and fundraising positions, working with global organizations.
  • Demonstrated success in working independently and proactively to develop successful fundraising initiatives with individuals, foundations, and corporations in the Arab Countries, reaching benchmarked targets.


  • Fluency in English and Arabic is required; other languages are a bonus
  • Highly organized and detail oriented with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects and meet deadlines in fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with multicultural funders and board members
  • Computer fluency in Microsoft environment (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Donor database expertise and online marketing software preferred.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends, for both events and global Zoom meetings, with some domestic and international travel, as needed.
