Restaurante Panorâmico de Monsanto

The site is a complete example of the modern Portuguese expression.

This startling 7000 sq. meter building has an iconic presence in the city of Lisbon, sitting 250 meters high atop the Parque Florestal de Monsanto—the city’s version of the Hollywood sign, visible from everywhere.  Built in 1967-1968 and designed by Chaves da Costa, it has sat abandoned for over a decade, in a ruinous state resulting from outright vandalism.  The building still contains original artwork including painted murals by Luís Dourdil, ceramic panels by Querubim Lapa, and tile panels by Manuela Madureira.  Its decay has captured the attention of both citizens and media, but solutions are still needed.
