Destruction of Sudan's Ancient Jabal Maragha

At World Monuments Fund, we are saddened and troubled by the news that Sudan's Jabal Maragha, a 2000 year-old site, has been destroyed by illegal gold diggers. This type of destruction and uncontrolled resource extraction is a common and growing problem in the region, home to hundreds of pyramids and other ancient sites. Much of Northern Sudan is sparsely populated. Further, poor security and little to no enforcement by local authorities make these remote sites easy targets.

World Monuments Fund encourages local efforts to increase awareness about this growing threat, and to educate the youth about Sudanese history and the significance of these sites as a first step to ensuring their protection for future generations.
