Reports from the Field: Gingerbread Houses

Preserving Haiti's Architectural Heritage

Castel Fleuri in 2010.

This lecture will focus on the challenges of recovery work undertaken in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, after the devastating earthquake of January 2010 that caused immense destruction to the country’s built fabric. Conor Bohan, from Haitian Education & Leadership Program, will discuss the important partnership role that World Monuments Fund played with other organizations, such as Institut du Patrimoine Wallon, HELP, and FOKAL, to organize a group of skilled heritage practitioners to advance conservation and stabilization efforts in the Gingerbread Neighborhood and throughout Haiti. The lecture will examine lessons learned from these efforts after the 2010 earthquake and ongoing activities to build local capacity and expand awareness for preservation of cultural heritage in Haiti.
