Miguel Horta e Costa, President of World Monuments Fund Portugal, and Margarida Donas Botto, Director of the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, invite you to a conversation on the conservation of the Jerónimos Monastery.
The legacy of World Monuments Fund Portugal is closely connected to Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery. The association’s first project was the conservation of Belém Tower (1995–1998), which introduced an innovative methodology for stone conservation and was recognized in 1999 with the Europa Nostra Award. This was followed by the conservation of the cloister of the Jerónimos Monastery (1998–2002), where laser ablation cleaning technology was used for the first time in Portugal.
Between 2012 and 2019, World Monuments Fund Portugal continued this commitment through a phased conservation program for the church vaults, including the west façade, the bell tower, and the iconic south portal facing the Tagus River, in close partnership with the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage.
The conversation brings together the specialists responsible for this work: Ângelo Silveira, architect of the Conservation and Restoration Plan for the Church, Cultural Heritage, I.P.; Fernando Henriques, member of the Scientific Committee of World Monuments Fund Portugal; Nuno Proença, conservator-restorer, Nova Conservação; and Margarida Donas Botto, Director of the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower.
The conversation will be moderated by Teresa Veiga de Macedo, Executive Director of World Monuments Fund Portugal.
The evening will conclude with a musical performance by Mariana Bobone, followed by a cocktail reception.
