The Edinburgh Graveyards Project

Five historic graveyards—Canongate, Greyfriars, St Cuthbert’s, Old Calton, and New Calton—are located within Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. They represent an important, if largely untapped, cultural resource. The inclusion of the graveyards on the 2010 World Monuments Watch catalyzed a partnership between the City of Edinburgh Council, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, and WMF. A consultant with specific expertise in graveyard conservation management was engaged to investigate the issues at play and to suggest a possible way forward toward a sustainable future. This report represents the edited results of that consultation phase.
