Trails to Tropical Treasures: A Tour of ASEAN Cultural Heritage

This report surveys the cultural heritage sites found in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on a country-by-country basis, recognizing that by the end of the 1990’s, tourism of such sites had become the largest single industry of member nations. At the same time, soaring population and urban crowding coupled with rapid economic development and changes in cultural habits have led to increasing neglect of heritage sites in the region. It also includes a selection of ASEAN sites that suffered from some of these common problems as of 1998. ASEAN hoped to draw international attention towards its heritage sites and encourage cultural tourism to member states while conducting cultural resource inventories, formulating appropriate conservation plans, and establishing responsible public and private entities to manage the sites.
