Sanro-den at Sukunahikona Shrine – Restoration of the Castle in the Air

Sanro-den, or private prayer hall, at Sukunahikona Shrine is one of the largest Kake-zukuri style architecture built in the early twenty century. It is a rare hybrid that combines features of traditional technical skills and artisanship with modern advances. WMF initiated a restoration project at the site after the announcement of the 2014 World Monuments Watch, and completed the work in 2015. In September 2016, UNESCO cited the restoration of Sanro-Den at Sukunahikona Shrine with the Award of Excellence in the annual Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Preservation.
